Blooming Boldly

I've got another mood board to share today from my Rental Chic Series. This series is all about how I'm making the most of apartment-living and trying to make this rented place feel cozy and personalized without making any major changes like paint, flooring, or fixtures! If you've missed it, I've already shared mood boards for our master bedroom and living room, as well as a few of the projects we've already accomplished!

This one is all about the bathroom, y'all. I don't know what you think of when you hear "rental property bathroom" but what comes to mind for me is cramped and outdated... and our bathroom fits that bill perfectly. Extremely cream, very "meh" flooring, standard oak vanity and basic chrome fixtures. You can tell it's been kept up pretty well. It just lacks absolutely any pizzazz whatsoever!

If we owned this place, I'd be tiling everything and at the very least painting the vanity, if not replacing it altogether. But sadly, none of that is possible, so it all falls to the decor. It a big job to do, so it's gotta be good!

The vision for this room all started with a shower curtain that I fell in love with when we were setting up our wedding registry. It felt simple and clean, but the pom poms were a fun and trendy touch!

Then, I found these black and white towels at Target. Have you caught on yet that I have a MAJOR thing for black and white, especially fun black and white geometric patterns? #noshame I loved how the color of these towels matched the shower curtain, but took the boldness level WAY up a notch.

This bathroom was so bland to begin with - I knew it needed some color. As crazy as I am about black and white, even a bold pattern wasn't gonna be enough to really brighten up this cramped room and give it some life! I turned to Pinterest for some inspiration (duh!) and found a few photos that captured the vibe I wanted. I was looking for rooms that brought together the natural, warm wood tones, the contrast of the black and white, and a few pops of color.

One idea I loved right away was a vintage-inspired rug. These are popping up all over the place in home decor lately! I love that they can go with almost any home style and come in so many different colors. I'm a big fan of pattern mixing and a small, intricate design like this is the perfect complement to the large, bold pattern on those towels!

The other component I found I was drawn to was using large photography prints for the art. You can see examples in that last two pins above! I have all sorts of art in our home - personal photos, yarn wall hangings, typography pieces, maps, illustrated canvases. But I don't have any non-personal photographs! I'm digging the idea of using some prints in this room, possibly with a city/urban vibe. But finding art prints can be difficult, especially because I want the art in my home to be significant. I want to feel something when I look at it! Anyone have suggestions of places to look for art prints?

So when you pull all these elements together you get an eclectic, modern, slightly boho bathroom that I seriously love!!

What do you think? Anything I should add or change? I'm still working on pulling this one together, but I'm trying to get it done by the end of the year! Be sure to keep watching my instagram for sneek peeks!

I'm here today with another mood board to share with you in my Rental Chic series - our Gray and Gold Master Bedroom! If you missed the Rental Chic Intro or the Living Room Mood Board, be sure to go check those out as well!

I am a pretty big fan of colors. Usually, I say the more the merrier and end up with a full rainbow of colors in most rooms I design. But this room was different... this was the first bedroom I would share with a boy! So, of course, I wanted to take his ideas into account as well. Logan couldn't care less about most home decor decisions, but when asked (and shown Pinterest images for inspiration) he actually did have some opinions about what he thought our bedroom should look like. Mostly, he leaned towards darker colors, a strong dreamy or retreat-like feeling, and not too modern design choices (which is hard for this mid-century loving girl!). BUT I figured those requests weren't too much to ask for a room that's half his anyway ;)

We were at Hobby Lobby one day when I came across this gold birch trees canvas and instantly fell in love! (I suggest clicking on that link and looking at the zoomed in version - there are a ton of gorgeous details!) I loved that the gold leaf accents made it feel really glam, but it was still peaceful and nature-y since it was an image of trees! Nature-y is the right word to use here, isn't in? Nature isn't really my thing! BUT it is my husband's and I'm pretty sure he would live in a cabin in this middle of the woods if I wouldn't go crazy. So, this canvas seemed like a great mix of both our styles... Almost like we were looking out the window of a little, serene shack in the woods after a beautiful gold glitter storm :P

Thankfully, Logan agreed that gray and gold was a winning combination! Gray is easily my favorite neutral. Some people feel it can be too cold or sterile, but I think when you pair it with a gold or mid-tone wood, it helps to keep it warm and cozy!

With a color scheme in mind, I turned to Pinterest for more inspiration (of course). If you're a visual person like me, I can't recommend doing some research and pulling together some specific ideas before you start trying to buy things! It helps you really nail down your vision and inspiration before you waste money on things that just don't work together.

We really wanted a room that felt dreamy, hazy, and sanctuary like. Simple lines, soft textures, and subtle nature references would all help! We decided to stay away from black and keep everything really close in color. Not quite monochromatic but definitely all in the same, mid-tone range - metallic gold, warm wood, and medium grays. The walls in our apartment are a soft cream and we knew we wouldn't be painting them. Neither of us is crazy about stark white rooms, so we knew we would want to pull in a lot of color through the accessories and decor.

Overall, the goal we came up with was a great meshing of both our ideas. The gray helps to darken things up, which is something Logan really wanted. All the textures and natural accents keep it feeling very calming and retreat-like which was another of Logan's requests. And since mid-century is my favorite style at the moment, of course I had to pull in some accents! But since Logan voiced he didn't want anything too extremely modern, I tried to stick to very simple and subtly inspired pieces that he ended up loving as well!

So there's a peek at the image in my head! In the next couple weeks, I'll share an update on how well we've done at making that vision a reality.

ALTHOUGH... if you follow me on Instagram you would have seen a sneak peek a few weeks ago... Did you miss it!? You can check it out here! And be sure to follow on Instagram for more behind-the-post peeks!

As promised in my Rental Chic Series Intro, I'm bringing you all in on the method to the madness and sharing my sources of inspiration for our home! I'm starting off today with our living room!

The style inspiration for our living room came to me in a place where many, many great women have found instant and amazing home decor inspiration over the years... Target, of course!

Logan and I had only been engaged for about a couple of weeks and were strolling the aisles of Target setting up our registry. I was insistent that our registry not just have the essentials, but fun stuff too! We were walking past the end of an aisle when I stopped dead in my tracks and made Logan turn around. I had fallen in LOVE with a throw pillow. This one, to be exact.

It was geometric, colorful, and black and white at the same time - three of my fav things! I had been majorly crushing on some strong mid-century-meets-southwestern vibes which I am blaming on posts like this living room and this dining room from abeautifulmess.com. It was warm, cozy, fun and trendy. I needed it!

I found out later that it was part of a collection at Target called Mid-Century Colorful Living Room and it's literally what my dreams are made of! I wanted it all!

But of course, it couldn't be that easy. Is styling a room EVER that easy? If it ever has been for you, I want to know your magic!

I didn't realize until too late that this collection at Target was seasonal and most of the goodness, especially that perfect pillow, had sold out everywhere before I knew it! *cue sadness*

I found another pillow at Target that at least had the same colors and the same woven texture going on. It was no "Global Multicolor" but it would do...

Knowing I wanted to stick with a mid-century modern vibe, and mix in some tribal prints and patterns, I was off to Pinterest to broaden my inspiration horizons from just the one Target style. Here's some of the images I was really drawn to -

Clearly, I need a LOT of color and LOT of pillows! Logan and I both love a nice dark teal, so I knew I wanted to incorporate that color quite a bit. For the other colors, I wanted to keep it warm - mostly dark pinks, yellows, and oranges.

I lot of the photos I was drawn to seemed to have live plants, large amounts of accessories, and good storage space. Given that we had a ton of new great photos from our engagement shoot and wedding, I knew a good gallery wall was in order, as well!

By the time when we started pulling everything together, I had a pretty solid picture in my head of what I wanted. HOWEVER, since I realize you all can't see that picture in my head, I pulled together a mood board to show you the goal!

What do you think?! What would you change or add?! Do you have a favorite part?! There are too many great pieces for me to even try to pick a favorite!

Curious how well we've done at creating our original vision?! Stay tuned! I'll be sharing an update soon on the progress we've made so far!
